The District is called as the “Fabrication and Boiler capital of India “ due to the presence of Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) which is one of the major industrial unit housed in Tiruchirappalli for producing High Pressure Boilers and the large number of MSMES units that have evolved to support BHEL .Apart from BHEL ,other PSUs such as Ordinance Factory, Railway Workshop and Dalmia Cements are also playing pivotal role in the industrial growth of the District.
The District also has a large number of small-scale industries around Thuvakkudi, Ariyamangalam, Thiruverumbur Industrial Estates. Viralimalai, considered an industrial suburb on Madurai road has the factories of TVS, India bus body building unit, Cethar Vessels, MM Forgings.
The Tiruchirappalli Engineering and Technology Cluster (TREAT ) is a successfully run Common facility Centre (CFC) by a private industry cluster for carrying out precision machining of Large Jobs and has been carrying out number of works for Aerospace and Defense OEMS and PSUs
